ART 100 - Week 3: Value
PART 1: APLHABET OF ART: VALUE
Assignment Instructions: Within the history of world art, find examples of artwork in which shadows are given prominence.
Example 1: Dark and Light
St. John The Baptist In The Desert
- Raphael
1520
Oil on Canvas

The style and content of Raphael's St. John The Baptist In The Desert fits well with the comtemporaries of the Renaisance period. Subjects in religious paintings are often bathed in light to emphasize purity of the soul. Here, the life of the painting is reinforced with a youthful appearance of the figure. The dark background gives strong contrast to the subject, as well as suggests to the viewer of the darkness of the world. (Perhaps the artist intended the light in the far background to represent life beyond the obvious darkness.)
Example 2: Gray
Arrangement in Gray and Black, No. 2: Portrait of Thomas Carlyle
- James McNeill Whistler
1873
Oil on Canvas

Here the colors are drab, the decorations are minimal, the lines in the background are straight, and the subject is disconnected from the audience. This world seems dreary, however, it is also sturdy. The man in this painting is clean cut and seems to have his life in order. His garments suggest a wealthy man who is respected. The gray used in this imagery works to keep his life simple, producing balance and order.

(OK - So Mickey Mouse is not an original idea, but when my Son saw what I was doing for homework he insisted that I draw Mickey's face for him.)
