ART 100 - Week 9: Landscape
PART 1: ALPHABET OF ART: SIZE
Assignment Instructions: Within the history of world art, find examples of where artists have made sketches and then include the finished art work.
Example 1: Portrait of Silvestre
Portrait of Silvestre
- Maurice Quentin de La Tour
1752
Pastel (used for sketch and final)
- Maurice Quentin de La Tour
1752
Pastel (used for sketch and final)
In La Tour’s portrait of Louis de Silvestre, we see two of examples of his favorite medium: pastel. In the image on the left, the original sketch is drawn with quick, but precise markings. On the right, these are translated into a richly refined, almost photorealistic portrait. Although the styles are distinct, the proportions are equal in each.
Example 2: Maternity
Mother and Child
- Pablo Picasso 1905 Sketch and Study |
Maternity
- Pablo Picasso 1909 Oil on Canvas |
Picasso sketched and painted multiple pictures of mothers with infant children over a series of years. Although the two images above show a different moment, they appear to be of the same woman and child. The same posture, face, and age is seen in each. However, the hands of the woman are alternated and she is shifted to opposite sides in each image, although her baby is held on the same side in both. The part that is most intriguing about Maternity is that it was painted four years after Mother and Child was sketched. Picasso maintained his art and continually aimed to adapt and improve his work.
Example 3: Lady And The Tramp

Animated Film
Disney is famous for introducing animation to feature length films. In Lady and The Tramp, the process is the same: tween sketches are drawn in between key frames. The image above is a key frame drawn from the story board in its original sketch/frame and final full color scene.
PART 2: Beach Landscape
The image above is sketched from a photo I took at Kaena Point on Oahu, HI (Leeward side) - 2011.
