ART 100 - Week 4: Color
PART 1: ALPHABET OF ART: COLOR
Assignment Instructions: Within the history of world art, find examples of art especially concerned with color.
Example 1: Primary Colors
The Scream
- Edvard Munch
1893
Tempura and Crayon on Cardboard
- Edvard Munch
1893
Tempura and Crayon on Cardboard
In this particular version of The Scream, the primary colors are clear, although are not likely to be the first observation. The curvature of the landscape representative of traveling sound waves made by the subject is quick to steal one’s attention. This work of art was recreated several times by the artist, each time with different materials and styles. The one we are looking at is the only edition that emphasizes primary colors.
Example 2: Violet Hue
Portrait of Adeline Vavoux VI
- Vincent Van Gogh
1890
Oil on Canvas
- Vincent Van Gogh
1890
Oil on Canvas
In his painting of Adline Ravoux VI, Van Gogh showcases the color purple without any doubt. Combined with his traditional wavy brush stroke, the emphasis of purple showcases a dream-like effect. The stillness of the model demonstrates a certain peacefulness of the moment.
Example 3: Pink Hue
The Pink Dancers, Before the Ballet
- Edgar Degas
1884
Oil on Canvas
- Edgar Degas
1884
Oil on Canvas
Degas is famous for his paintings of ballerinas. Here we see a group of young girls preparing for a performance in a moment that seems as though they are attempting to calm each other down. The use of pink is likely a truthful representation of the uniform of the group. However, exploiting the color seems decisive since it is set with a higher intensity against colors in the background that seem muted. Utilizing pink has a vibrance that reflects the energy of the youth featured, even if they may feel slightly timid.
