ART 100 - Week 6: Perspective
PART 1: ALPHABET OF ART
Assignment Instructions: Within the history of world art, find some examples of artwork, analyze them by determining what the artist did with the Elements in order to accomplish the unique picture plane.
Example 1: In-Depth Picture Plane
A Sunday on La Grande Jatte
- Georges Seurat
Oil on Canvas
1884
- Georges Seurat
Oil on Canvas
1884
It is easy to see in Seurat's painting that figures in the foreground are dominant, mainly due to size, but also as a result of a concentration of the richest colors in the image. Other people are receeding into the distant, yet they are not forgotten as the sunlight becomes brighter with increased depth.
Example 2: Decorative Picture Plane
The Unicorn is Found

With the exception of the castle nearly hidden in the distance, the figures found throughout this scene are equal in stature regardless of position. Figures in the crowd behind the bushes have the same frame as those to either side. In fact, the animals in the front are small in proportion, although they are in the foreground. The unicorn itself is closer in size to a dog than a horse when measured against the man to its left. It would seem that proportions are less of a priority to the artist than the ability to decipher expressions regardless of distance.
